Rockin' Clue game makes rock identification fun
Games make learning extra fun, so Sarah Steggemann of Sells Middle School created a Clue-type game to challenge her students' knowledge of rocks and minerals.
"In my rock unit we used lesson 4.2 from the OOGEEP Geology Rocks and Minerals unit, having the students place rocks into 3 groups," said Steggemann. "This was a little challenging due to teaching remotely, but overall I think the students did a nice job. Many talked about 'shiny' and 'dull' or colors and they placed the samples in groups."
Later in the week, students placed the characteristics of each rock type into a chart to help them organize and study the three main rock types.
To review and solidify their learning, Steggemann created a rock “Clue game" type activity. Students answer questions that will give them a clue. This clue helps them eliminate choices until they have only one option left for the final answer. Her students really enjoyed working through this activity, she said.
