Pie Slices of Earth

Katharine Skuldt of Heritage Middle School in Westerville had her 8th graders work on a variation of the Differentiation of Earth's Layers activity called Pie Slices of Earth. "I think it went really well. It was easy to use, even while students are distanced in the classroom." she said. "My students enjoyed this lesson because we haven't been able to do as many hands-on activities and labs this year. I think they welcomed the change of pace for the day."

This activity helped students visualize the Earth's layers and their position, composition, and thickness. This activity fit with 8th grade earth science standards dealing with the composition and properties of Earth's interior, analyzing data, and connecting evidence and explanations.

Skuldt attended last summer's Geology workshop for teachers. "The workshop was helpful in many ways," she said. "First, it allowed me to collaborate with other teachers who teach similar content in different ways. It also provided me with actual lessons that I could use or modify for use with my students, and even some materials to help facilitate the teaching and learning of those lessons, which is always appreciated!"
