Researching oil and gas careers

Not many students are aware of careers related to the oil and natural gas industry, so Beth Smith, a teacher in Fayetteville Perry Local schools, decided to have them do some digging!

She divided the students in her environmental science class into groups and had them present a power point on different aspects of the oil and natural gas industry. They had to include at least twenty slides, a career connection and word wall, and also have an activity or demonstration for the class.

These are the activities they included in their project:

1.2 Biotic materials

1.4 Geologic puzzle

2.2 Porosity and permeability
2.3 Create rock models

3.2 Skewer contour mapping

4.1 Sweet explorations
5.2 Pipeline pigging

Smith said this lesson went along with her curriculum dealing with renewable and nonrenewable resources and also helped with teaching students about available careers. The students did not have much prior knowledge of the industry.

"This workshop taught me a tremendous amount about oil and gas. It was one of the best ones I have ever taken. I was excited to pass on my knowledge to the students and other teachers," she said.
