Researching crude oil and natural gas formation

Cindy Cereghin's sixth graders at Defiance Middle School reviewed their learning by preparing a presentation on the topic of "How are crude oil and natural gas formed?" The students worked in groups, and the groups were allowed to collaborate with one another. Cereghin provided poster paper and writing instruments as well as books and supporting content. After research and preparation, they had two minutes to present their findings to the class. This activity related to many literacy standards.

Cereghin said, "Recently, Defiance City Schools introduced a teaching strategy called SOLE. I chose to use this teaching method to incorporate the geologic puzzle as an exit ticket for each group. During their presentation, many groups used the geologic puzzle as a reference point. I will use more puzzles in my SOLE lessons in the future."
