Another kind of mining

Becky Weldy of Miami East High School creatively adapted the skewer contour mapping lesson for her Earth Geology class. Weldy said, “I altered the idea to fit into my aggregate mining resource unit. Since I teach in western Ohio, we don't mine oil and natural gas, but we mine aggregates. I modified the lesson to help students understand test drills used to estimate the amount of limestone and sand used in an gravel pit.”

Weldy attended an OOGEEP workshop for educators and received information and materials useful for her classroom. She’s shared the industry careers booklet with other teachers in her building, and she’s displayed materials from the workshop for her students.

She says she’d definitely recommend the workshop to other teachers. For information about upcoming workshops, visit oogeep.org/events.
