Team building to create a derrick!

Mary Wolf's third grade students at Big Walnut Elementary enjoyed researching and learning about engineers, derricks, and pigging. Each group of students made a Google slide presentation about them. Then they designed, created, and tested their own derrick, a lesson from the STEM curriculum Drilling and Well Stimulation topic.

"It was great to see how they collaborated and came up with a plan to make a derrick. They then worked on building and testing their derrick structure," Wolf said.

Wolf attended the elementary STEM teacher workshop sponsored by Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education. "Some of the highlights of the workshop for me as a teacher were working with other teachers and learning about the oil and gas industry. I especially liked going on the field trips and seeing firsthand how fossil fuels are produced. All of the hands-on experiences of both the class and the field trips helped me to integrate the different areas of STEM for my students."
