Informed discussions about drilling in Ohio

Kevin Auerbach, a fourth grade science and math teacher at Franklin Elementary School in Wadsworth, Ohio, used what he learned at the OOGEEP summer educator’s workshop to talk about drilling with his students. Auerbach had students discuss types of drilling and the positive and negative impacts on ecosystems, part of Ohio state standards for fourth grade science. Auerbach said, “Students responded well to the idea that there are positive impacts such as using natural resources for transportation and manufacturing. Other positive impacts included the process of horizontal drilling, which allows drilling from a distance and avoids disrupting certain ecosystems. As a result of the workshop, I was able to guide the students’ discussion much better.”

Auerbach found the workshop useful and has shared information about the workshop and lessons with colleagues and district level STEM and grade level teams. Find out about upcoming workshops here!
