Great workshop leads to engaged students
Do your students understand the relative size of the layers of the earth? The Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program's Geology workshop has several activities about this topic. Harrison Career Center science instructor Brent Tripp attended the workshop and used the Scaling Out Earth's Layers activity with his junior level environmental science class.
He said the students were amazed at the scale of the earth's layers. "When they colored pictures of the layers of the earth, there were many comments about 'Wow, we live on that thin of a layer?!' We have talked about this many times before but they didn't really grasp it until now. It was interesting seeing so many students making the same observation. All were students actively engaged, a rare thing so early in the year. This is an activity I will be doing every year from now on."
