How I used these materials/7th Grade Science
From OOGEEP
Submitted by Karen McCarthy, Green Middle School, Green, Ohio
Considering the benchmarks/standards that you are required to teach what science concept or content will you plan to teach
Environmental impact / Industry application / Technology benefits
Ways to incorporate different teaching methods
- Lecture
Review Roadmap of Natural Gas and Crude Oil (modules completed in grade 6). Use Crude Oil Word Find from the OOGEEP binder. Think-pair-share a list of petroleum products. Share articles from: Armond Budish, Jack Shaner, OEC fact sheet, Warren Schools, “Parks might run on oil” 6/3/09-Columbus Dispatch, “Ohio Senate urges drilling in states parks”, 6/4/09-Beacon Journal, Editorial – Dennis Willard, Editorial, “Drilling in state parks is not worth the costs."
- Reading
Students read the following for background information: OOGEEP: Economic Impact, Lifestyle Impact, Energy Impact sheets; Oil and Natural Gas, 2008 DK Publishing; Ohio Bill No. 107; Library books – Akron-Summit Library Green Branch.
- Audio-visual
Projected on screen: Our Economy Runs on Fossil Fuels; What a Barrel of Crude Oil Makes; Ohio State Park locations. Videos: Fueless; OOGEEP wiki and http://www.oogeep.org/media/mtv.html. Power point of well sites created by staff. Ohio Department of Natural Resources Emergency Oil and Gas Well Locator: www.dnr.state.oh.us/website/geosurvey_emergency_oilgas/viewer.htm and complete the Impact Study Sheet.
- Discussion Group
Students use KWL and Think-Pair-Share to answer the following questions: Why are people arguing about drilling in Ohio’s state parks? What are the pros and cons of drilling? What do we need to know to make an informed decision? Is there oil in Ohio? Should we drill for petroleum in Ohio's State Parks?Other questions that can be explored: Do parks need money? / Is there truly a need for more fuel from Ohio? / What impact on the environment will be caused? / Would the affects be permanent or temporary from drill site? / Are there better sources of energy in Ohio? / How much money from a well? / Who gets money? / Who pays for well? / Will the footprint of a well be a concern? / What is the original purpose of Ohio’s state parks?
- Teach Others/Immediate Use of Learning
Students will prepare a business letter that argues for or against the drilling of petroleum wells in Ohio’s state parks. Create an editorial commercial to support your opinion.
- Use of Technology
Students will locate article in newspaper using Ohio.com on the subject of “energy in Ohio” (petroleum, natural gas, oil, wind, solar, needs, uses, amounts,…). Article may be an editorial or factual article. Students will complete Science Current Events form. Students will present article summary orally to the class. Locate well close to home. Complete Impact Study sheet.www.dnr.state.oh.us/website/geostudy_emergency_oilgas/viewer.htm. Use discussion group questions / handout – locate facts to support brainstorming ideas and information. 1.Use internet to locate three facts to support opinion on drilling of wells in Ohio’s parks.
- Use of 21st Century Skills
Create an editorial video commercial to support your opinion about drilling for petroleum in Ohio’s state parks. (Include script and video) Use http://www.oogeep.org/media/mtv.html for examples.
Ways to incorporate graphic organizers
- Students create bingo game with vocabulary words about petroleum.
- Graph uses of a barrel of petroleum.
Ways to use field trips or make real-life industry connections
