How I used these materials/7th Grade Science 2
From OOGEEP
Submitted by M. Porter, Sheridan Middle School, Thornville, Ohio
Considering the benchmarks/standards that you are required to teach what science concept or content will you plan to teach:
- Earth Systems: Explain the Earth’s capacity to absorb and recycle materials naturally can change the environment quality depending on the length of time involved.
- Science and Technology: Explain how need, attitudes and values influence the direction of technological development: environmental and economic concerns; limitations of science and technology.
- Scientific Inquiry
[edit] Ways to incorporate different teaching methods
- Lecture
Have local representative from OOGEEP give a guest presentation on the local importance/impact of amount of gas and oil wells in Perry County. Discussion should include how local geology lends itself to the proliferation of wells, the environment impact involved, and the economic importance of these wells.
- Reading
Students will read the OOGEEP background information on oil and gas wells in Ohio as well as 1) Imagine Life without Oil and Gas products , 2) the general fact sheet, 3)Science Fair ideas, 4) the OOGEEP fact sheets: Lifestyle Benefits, Energy Benefits and Economic Benefits. Students will discuss with partners, share with groups, and then help lead a whole class discussion.
- Audio-visual
Students will examine a projection picture of oil and gas fields map of Ohio (OOGEEP workshop binder) from the Dept of Natural Resources, Division of Geological Survey to determine importance and impact of gas and oil wells in Perry County. Students will also use www.geobop.com/paleozoo/world/NA/US/OH/ Also use the OOGEEP wiki site to find other information pertaining to this.
- Demonstration
Students will use the porosity and permeability lab with partners/small groups to discover the meaning of these words. Students will complete the Fish Fossil and Fuel oil formation to help them understand the formation of fossil fuels. Students will do “It’s a Gas or Making Crude Oil” lab in small groups and keep a log of observations.
- Discussion Group
Students will be either pro or con for drilling and form small accordingly. Students will do research to support their position including economic implications and environmental impacts. Each group will be paired with the opposing position for “town hall” meetings. Students will also discuss carbon footprints.
- Practice by Doing
Students will do contour mapping, first on paper (OOGEEP binder pages II-2 through II-5) then use Styrofoam clamshell take out containers set up by teacher to make their own contour maps.
- Teach Others/Immediate Use of Learning
Students will participate in “In the Round Game”. Students will make a jeopardy type game to share with the class on the smart board.
- Use of Technology
Students will computers to research number of products made from or containing petroleum. Students will make posters or web pages picturing items made from petroleum products. Students will make wordles to share with class. Students will compare the cost of gallon of oil to everyday products they use. (i.e. Gallon of milk)
- Use of 21st Century Skills
Students and a partner will create a power point presentation on a topic discussed during this unit. Students will create a video clip of the pro/cons of oil/gas well drilling discussing economic/environmental impacts. Students will do a web quest or create a pod cast on topics discussed in this unit.
[edit] Ways to incorporate graphic organizers
- Students will make foldables for formation of fossil fuels, vocabulary words, etc.
- Students will make wordles for vocabulary words.
- Students will create a diagram showing petroleum products in everyday living.
- Students will make flip books showing formation of fossil fuels or the oil/gas drilling process.
[edit] Ways to use field trips or make real-life industry connections
- Schedule a field trip to a local oil/gas well and collection area.
- Contact OOGEEP for speakers from the local area gas/oil producers.
- Industry representative could discuss many uses of petroleum and impact on our lives.
- Geologist from the Ohio Dept of Natural Resources Geology Division
- Rhonda Reda from OOGEEP
