Club activities
Want some suggestions for what your club can do?
Create research teams
Create experts in various topics by dividing the group into Research Teams. Each team can prepare a presentation to share their expertise with other club members.
- Air quality: What is it? How is it measured?
- Air Pollution: What causes it? Do we have it in our town?
- Asthma/lung disease: What are the symptoms? What can you do if you have asthma? How does air pollution impact symptoms?
- Biodiesel fuel: What is it? What are the benefits?
- School bus transportation: What fuel is used in buses? Where does the exhaust create the most pollution? What are some solutions to the problem?
Take a field trip or invite speakers
Find local organizations who address these issues. Tour the site to look for meaningful exhibits and informative literature. Invite one of the employees to explain what their organization does.
- American Lung Association to learn about lung health
- EPA to learn about AQI
- Fuel distributor to learn where the fuel comes from and the marketing that is required for sales
- Bio-refinery where the biotic material is made into fuel
- Farm to hear the farmer’s point of view
Conduct interviews and surveys
Find out how “real” the problem is at your school or in your district. What additional information is needed? Prepare questions to get the answers and information you need. Some surveys may be to acquire factual information and others may be to gather opinions, attitudes and behaviors.

Problem solve and plan action steps
Action steps can include education for learners of all ages, awareness building campaigns and advocacy activities.
- Make Presentations to PTA/PTO groups, school board meetings, teachers and administrators.
- Create PSAs to build awareness at the school.
- Create posters, bumper stickers, flyers and brochures. (Does your bus smell like french fries?)
- Start a Student Blog to build interest, gather and share information about the topic.
- Create a Jeopardy Game: This can be a student generated Jeopardy Game that can be put on the web. It is an activity that older students can share with younger students or that younger students can include in awareness building activities.
- Science experiments as a club activity will increase the understanding.
- Contact Your Legislator
- Write Letters to the Editor
- Write a School Bus Idling Policy (Find out how much money your school district can save by using a school bus idling calculator).
Use digital technology to make global connections with students.
